"I reject your reality and substitute my own." - Adam Savage, Mythbusters
Chapter One-
Road Block[/center]
- “Come on!!” Dusk, a small gray and black Timber wolf called to his two siblings. “We have to get there before moonrise!”
- It was sunset, the clouds were turning vivid shades of orange and pink to more faded blues and grays. The great black walls of rock stood silhouetted against the almost painted sky. The visibility was poor, there was haze at ground level and you could have seen only about twenty feet ahead of you. As you got down into the quarry there was a strong earthy scent and the ground was rough with stones.
- “I know, you told me a million times…” RedFern, a beautiful young Red wolf and one of his two sisters, sighed as she scrambled down into the old quarry. It would take at least five minuets to get across the rocky terrain, not including the climb back up the opposite cliff. They would have to hurry. “Be careful though,” She yipped, a pebble was jabbing into her paw pad as she bounced along with her brother “there are lots of scary things here at night.”
- “I know, remember when Tangles disappeared?” Cider asked in her soft angelic voice. She was a brown stripped Mexican wolf whose tail had been chopped off and was the last of the three siblings. Trailing a bit behind the others, she was being more cautious as to where she stepped.
- “Yeah I remember that all the adults were making a fuss over him. That was really annoying…” Dusk trailed off as his sister skidded to a halt beside him. He padded to a stop, startled. “What?” he whimpered while Cider came up on his other side. She too looked upset.
- RedFern stared blankly ahead. She knew she had seen something move in the fog. She sniffed at the air, nothing. Shuffling her paws she looked back at her brother and sister. “It… It was nothing…” she stammered, trying to cover up her fear. They had to keep going.
- The fur on the back of Cider’s neck rose. Something was wrong; she just couldn’t put her paw on it. “Then we better get across this forsaken place before we’re too late.” Her normally calm voice turned into a quiet growl. Then, out of the corner of her eye, she saw slight movement. Whipping her head around she pressed closer to Dusk, who looked bewildered by all these odd behaviors. Her gaze cut through the fog, side to side, there had to be something out there…
- Dusk smelt the fear emanating from his sisters. Something was terribly wrong, and they weren’t telling him. He tensed his leg mussels, ready to leap at anything that moved. “Tell me what’s wrong!” His insistent bark rang out through the mist. While shifting moist dirt around under his paws, he noticed a faint shape flitter in and out of view, then heard light paw steps only feet away.
- RedFern was too shaken to reply to her brother’s bark. After hearing the paw steps come and leave, they were huddled together like pups. What was lurking beyond their view?
- Cider was terrified out of her fur. Shivering, she whispered to her brother “What’s out there?” Suddenly she felt a cold wave cover her body, she was sure she was being watched.
- “I don’t know…” Dusk whimpered. It was true though, he had no idea what lay ahead. Then his mind jumped back to their mission- getting to the neighboring pack, the Grass Lands Pack to retrieve vital herbs for their pack’s survival. “We need to get there before moonrise, before it’s too late to save our pack.”
- The old abandon quarry was the only thing separating the Waterfall Pack from the Grass Lands Pack. Their home pack had fallen very ill with a mysterious sickness, and they were short on the herbs and wisdom that they so badly needed. Only the young pups and juniors were unaffected by this disease, so they were sent by the slowly dieing adults to seek help from their allied pack, the Grass Lands Pack.
- Just as RedFern was about to suggest moving on, through the danger, the dull shape appeared once again. She was scared stiff, what if it was their fault that their pack died out? Two more shapes appeared, one smaller and one about the same size, then the paw steps began again.
- “’Ello pups. What might ‘ye be doin’ out here so late? Don’cha know is dangerous?” A rough, heavily accented voice cut through the gloom as the three shapes came into a better view. The wolf in the center who had spoken was black and red; he had a red ‘X’ on his forehead and a red muzzle. The one to his right was also black and red, but had one streak of red across both of his eyes. The one to his left was black and white, and a lot smaller, like a pup. She had two streaks of white coming from the corners of both of her eyes, three white stripes around each of her ears, and a white muzzle. Both of the black and red wolves had three tails. “Huh? Arn’cha gonna answer ol’ eXy?” The middle wolf grinned as he growled out the scratchy words.
- Dusk swallowed hard, should he obey them? As he was thinking the situation out, Cider whined an answer.
- “We… we need to get to the grasslands before moonrise, Mr. eX, this is the fastest way.” Cider had to say something, these guys looked vicious. If we don’t do their every wish they could rip us to shreds easily, she thought, still shaking violently next to her brother and sister.
- “I ‘on’t think you’ll be goin’ anywher’.” He grinned evilly, showing his yellowed fangs.
